Explain disparities and inequities that occur within countries resulting from ethnicity, residence, parental education, income, employment (formal and informal), and land ownership.

Country Poverty Profile

In order to learn about the causes of poverty in various countries, we had to chose a country that is in poverty to research why that specific country is in poverty. My group and I chose Sudan as our country. We learned that Sudan has many sources of poverty, some of them being governance failure, weather, and conflict. To find more information on Sudan, click on the picture above

Dependency Theory Notes

Dependency Theory
  • Low-income countries give resources for cheap to developed countries

  • Developed countries sell the processed goods back to low-income countries, more expensive

  • Periphery will never be able to become a core

    • Because of…

      • Exploitation

      • Core benefits from exploiting the periphery and doesn’t want that system to change

      • Theory started from the colonial times

      • Neo-colonialism

        • Trade rules, aid → all stops periphery from being a core

        • World Bank, IMF, G20, all INGO’s that are controlled by developed countries which have rules on the aid given to LEDC’s from the INGO’s

World Systems Theory
Rostow's model
  • Difference between world systems and dependency theory

    • Periphery have the chance to become core

  • All countries go through the stages

  • Most LEDC’s cannot get out of stage 3

  • 1-3 = periphery

  • 4 = semi-periphery

  • 5 = core
