Migration Terminology

To start off our next unit, we had to define terms related to migration in order to give us a better and easier understanding of the topic. By clicking on the picture above, you will be able to find my terms, definitions and examples/statistics.

Migration Typology Presentation

As a class, we chose a term to create an infopic about and added it all to a slideshow. I chose to focus on illegal or irregular migrants and as you can see from the infopic I added a few statistics about the topic. By clicking on the picture above, you will be able to find the presentation on the types of migration.

Pros and Cons of Migration

Along with the presentation on the types of migration, we also had to do a presentation on the pros and cons of migration. This is not my work, but my classmates. By clicking on the picture to the right, you will be able to find the presentation on the pros and cons of migration.

Video Critique

I found this video very interesting and new. The concept of what the speaker was presenting was something that I hadn’t thought of before, and the way he presented the topic was a very intelligent way of capturing the audience’s attention. In the video the speaker talks about world poverty in relation to migration, all represented by gumballs. He represents one gumball as 1,000 people and collects the necessary amount of gumballs to show how many people live under poverty around the world. He also states that the US allows 1 million migrants in every year, but later explain how 1 million migrants will never be enough, there will always be more migrants that want better opportunities in the US than in their homeland, where they live in poverty. The speaker demonstrates that by talking about how many people are born each year into poverty, and how migration will never be the solution to the problem of poverty in these countries because of the growing population that live in poverty around the world. He states that the real solution to the migrant crisis, that different countries are facing, are for the original country to improve their living standards and help those that are living under the poverty line. Countries such as Libya need to increase the lives of their citizens so that they want to live there, because migration is not going to be the answer to everybody’s problems in the long run.

Kenyan migration

For this activity, we as a class, were assigned a particular topic concerning migration in Kenya and had to creat an infopic about it. I had the topic, Vision 2030, which is a set of goals that the Kenyan government has listed as a national planning strategy in order to create a more industrialized country that does not have a lot of push factors for the population. Other topics included the trends and compositions of immigration and emigration in Kenya, emigration for employment, remittances, and voluntary internal migration in Kenya. The infopics for the topics can be seen in the gallery below.
